Can you get high from CBD?

The short answer is no. Depending on whether or not the CBD product contains any THC (the psychoactive chemical that creates the high feeling) will determine whether or not you feel any type of high.

CBD, cannabidiol, is sometimes controversial because it is a cannabinoid—a plant extract derived from cannabis. However, it is not a psychoactive cannabinoid, so you cannot “get high” from CBD. There are over 100 types of cannabinoids and only one, THC, is psychoactive.

What is the “high” feeling?

The psychoactive element of THC is what creates the “high” and euphoric feeling.

Cannabinoids, both THC and CBD, work by affecting the communication system in your brain and body, called the endocannabinoid (EC) system. The body has natural cannabinoids that interact with receptors to regulate important body functions like how a person feels, moves and reacts.

THC overwhelms the EC system and overrides these natural cannabinoids interfering with their ability to regulate the brain and body. This often creates the feeling of euphoria, but can also increase anxiety, keep you up and affect judgement.

While CBD also interacts with the EC system, it doesn’t overwhelm or override it. Instead, it can help the body’s natural cannabinoids do their job—regulate mood, improve sleep and relieve pain—making it a safe possible medication for a variety of conditions, without the adverse effects of THC.

How is CBD separated from THC?

Separating CBD depends on the type of cannabis it comes from and the processes it undergoes. There are many different types of cannabis plants with different levels of THC. Hemp, a cannabis variety, has very low traces of THC, some as low as 0.3%, making it very popular for extracting CBD.

While raw hemp may contain negligible amounts of THC, there are numerous technologies and processes that can remove all traces. This leaves a product that is 100% THC-free and non-toxic.

You can’t overdose, you can transport it on a plane and it can be used while working, driving or undertaking physical activities such as exercise and sports.
